Politics
Mutants have been known, at least politically and medically since the late 1970s. However, a combination of low birth rates, low visibility, and just not caring made them fairly ignored until the early 1990s with the lynching of a 14 year old boy who burned a human boy during the mutant's manifestation. The spark of that public reaction was fanned by Erik Lensherr's complete destruction of the town in the aftermath. In the following decade mutants were slowly used more and more as weapons and soldiers in politically unsettled and warring areas.
In 2001, Erik Lensherr began staging demonstrations and advocating survival of the fittest- mutants being the fittest. At the same time Charles Xavier began speaking out against Erik's demonstrations- while never refuting his politics, his belief, or the use of violence- just not starting it.
Charles is called a Freedom Fighter and is widely spoken of being an eventual nobel peace prize for his work with mutants and humans peace.
Erik is called a terrorist and is wanted in 12 countries.
SHIELD cleans up after Erik's demonstrations and people who act on his idealogy without his direct involvement as well as simple power accidents that get. Messy.
The political climate/attitudes toward mutants IS going to be the plot. If you have questions, feel free to ask either Becky or I- we're handling different parts of it, so we may have to ask the other, but we will answer ASAP. Please don't make things up about the politics without asking though- we do know what's going to happen. Please feel free to respond IC when we post about it though!
